PI222, a male melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra), stranded alive April 27, 2007 on South Padre Island, Texas. The animal was recovered by University of Texas Pan America and TMMSN volunteers. He was very emaciated, extremely weak, and ill upon stranding. Unfortunately, his health only continued to decline of the course of the next two days and he passed away April 29, 2007.
Everyone in South Padre did a fantastic job taking on this rehab and although the outcome was not successful, there is still much to learn regarding this species. A necropsy was performed that evening in South Padre.
